Slow Breathing Reduces Pain

If a person usually feels pain in its body parts, it could be a case of not breathing in tandem. Pain could be sporadic or chronic and can occur in any part of body where there are nerves. Various common types of chronic pain include back and neck pain, muscle and joint pain etc. There are various reasons for pain like due to age, genetics, injuries, illness, surgery etc. Fibromyalgia (FM) patients are prone to chronic pain. In a recent research published in PAIN a Journal of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP)of carried out Arthur (Bud) Craig, PhD, at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, it was revealed that controlled breathing slow down the rate of pain drastically. Even people suffering from Fibromyalgia found relief as they breathe slowly except when they were overwhelmed by negative feelings, depression and sadness.

The findings laid stress on the beneficial effects through yogic and Zen meditation which helps in reducing feelings of guilt and depression. The results also stressed on the role of a person’s positive and negative attitude on the feelings of pain. The study was carried on the two groups of women in the age group of 45 to 65. One group had women who were diagnosed with fibromyalgia and other group was healthy. During the research participants were administered moderately painful heat pulses on their palms while they were breathing normally and when they reduce their breathing rat by 50 percent. After each administration they were asked to report their feelings of pain and its intensity and their unpleasantness and their affect on mood.
On analyzing the all results of intensity of the pain and unpleasantness feeling it was found, those participants who breathed slowly had a very low intensity of pain than their counterparts. Various other random studies have highlighted that those who remain depressed can acquire fibromyalgia disease and there is a sure shot connection between pain and emotions. The study made it clear that those suffering from fibromyalgia can benefit from slow breathing if they instill positive affect as a trait. Dr. Craig concluded, “the study showcased the FM patients generally contain low positive affects or energy reserves, but those who have some positive energy left in their “mental battery” can be benefited from slow breathing just like healthy normal.”

Apart from therapy and surgery, diet and lifestyle also come into the picture in preventing and controlling pain management. Various doctors are of the view that physical therapy and workout regimens also help in strengthening muscles, joints and bones. Moreover a diet full of protein and calcium with vitamin D is also recommended to control pain very especially those persons who are recovering from accidents and sports injuries. Apart from this patients are also advised sufficient rest and use of heat and cold therapy to reduce pain and swelling.

Going to the Gym Shouldn’t Be a Workout for Your Eardrums

Did you love listening to your iPod while working out at a gym, in kitchen, while traveling or when you are engaged in other activities? If so read on what a new research say about this. In a recent research published in International Journal of Audiology by Bill Hodgetts, assistant professor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine of University of Alberta pointed out that there is no problem listening to an iPod while working out but we need to focus on the volume levels in our earphones. The Professor pointed out that the atmosphere at a gym often trigger people to raise the volume of their iPod to unsafe levels thus raising potential damage to the ear.

The study was conducted at a place having gym-like setting, during the course of the study half of the participants listened at a potentially dangerous levels while working out due to the higher background noises. Hogetts found that apart from listening at higher volumes it should also be ensured how long s/he listens the iPod could also put a person at risk of having hearing loss. But Professor says there is good news “seal” the ear canal with good earphones. Ear plugs often helps in reducing background noises.

In yet another study on iPod listening carried out by the University of Colorado at Boulder and Children’s Hospital Boston revealed surprising behavior of teens. On receiving instructions from their peers to turn the volume of their iPods down, the teens instead turn them up higher, thus exposing their ears to potential damage. Moreover the study highlighted that teen boys listen louder than teen girls pointed out Cory Portnuff, CU-Boulder audiologist and doctoral candidate, who chaired the study. Such strange behavior put teens at a risk of music induced hearing loss. Portnuff informed we are clueless as to why teens who are concerned about the hearing loss risk play their music louder than others, but those teens who are aware the benefits of listening at lower levels had less hearing loss risk, which is why we emphasis in providing targeted education. However, the study was conducted at a relatively small percentage of teens. The number of teens who listen their iPods and MP3 players at a dangerous level is between 7 and 24 percent, it can’t be said that it is an epidemic level for hearing loss from these players.

One more concern researchers found that while Walkmans used 20 years ago were operated on AA batteries used to exhaust after a few hours, but iPods can run up to 20 hours without recharging them. All in all Hodgetts’ mission is to acquaint people to use appropriate superior quality earphones to enjoy music at a safer and lower level.

Loss of Smell may lead to early onset of Alzheimer’s Disease

There are a number of people in the world who experience loss of smell or smell disorder in their life period. While there are other people who apart from smell disorder even encounter loss of taste. But life is all about smell and taste. We enjoy our food and can tell the host the food is tasty. Smelling power alert human beings when a smoke emanates or in the case of gas leak. Smell and taste are an eternal part of human beings. In the absence of it life becomes tasteless. In medical terms loss of sense is known as hyposmia and total loss of it is called anosmia. In a recent study published in the Journal of Neuroscience dated January 13, 2010 the loss of smell disorder has been related to Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

The study was carried on the genetically engineered mice at NYU Langone Medical Center revealed that olfactory dysfunction – a common symptom of Alzheimer could be considered as an early warning tool for the disease. During the course of the study these mice developed amyloids in their brains, just akin to humans. In the case of Alzheimer disease amyloid pathology starts in the region of brain, which is responsible for smell, just above the nose. The article disclosed that the symptoms of this disease could be seen early in life, this novel olfactory would further help in the early detection of this disease, before the attrition of the brain. Noted co-author of the project, Daniel W. Wesson, PhD, of the NYU School of Medicine and the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research in Orangeburg, New York said, this is an astonishing finding because just like a brain scan, a laboratory designed olfactory test would be an inexpensive way to detect Alzheimer at an early stage.

However, not all cases could be linked to the loss of smell with the Alzheimer, as there are various reasons for the loss of sense of smell like, after effect of different medications like that pertaining to allergy, nutritional deficiency, metabolic disorder or sinus or respiratory problem which occurs due to polyps of sinus disease. Sometimes head injury could result in an instant loss of smell which would be permanent in nature. At times due to cold weather there could be a temporary loss of smell. The nasal obstructions and sinus polyps could also be the reason behind temporary loss of smell and after sometime people would get back their loss of smell.

The loss of smell in a person could be gauged when a person complains about the food being tasteless. A person suffering from cold and flu could also complain about the loss of smell and taste for weeks. There are also herbal remedies available for AD like Clematis, Mugwort, Euphobia, fenugreek, Horse Radish etc.

Mango Effective in Preventing, Stopping Certain Colon, Breast Cancer Cells, Food Scientists Find

Who does not like to have fruits in their daily diet? After all fruits have the capability of keeping diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer, cancer and other heart diseases at bay. Now a day’s life is spinning at faster rate we have to accomplish the given task within a stipulated time frame with the result people work beyond their capacity. They are exposed to toxic fumes and pollution and remain under stress. The simple way to escape from these diseases is to take the assistance of fruits which provide various antioxidants which in turn prevent us from free radicals from attacking our body.

According to a new study carried out by Texas AgriLife Research food scientists, mango fruit was found to be preventive in blocking various colon and breast cancer cells in the lab. Before the onset of this revelation, little information was there about the health benefits from mango. The scientists examined five varieties of mangoes found in the U.S. viz., Kent, Francine, Ataulfo, Tommy/Atkins and Haden. Dr. Steve Talcott who conducted the study on cancer cells said, for fighting various diseases people recognize only antioxidants like blueberry, pomegranate, and acai, mango is not even considered in this list. That is the reason why the scientists checked the effect of mango in fighting cancer cells and found they actually stopped the growth of cancer in certain areas like breast and colon cell lines. This test of mango polyphenol extracts was carried in vitro on colon, lungs, leukemia, prostate cancers and breasts. Mango’s effect was seen in combating leukemia, prostate cancers and lung but its true efficacy was seen in fighting breast and colon cancers. Talcotts intend to do some small clinical trial on individuals with increased inflation in their intestines who have a higher risk for cancer, after seeing the results they can plan a larger trial, to see if there is any clinical relevance.

Other benefits of having mangoes, which contain low carbohydrate, are they combat acidity and poor digestion, relieve clogged pores of the skin, are rich in iron and anemic people are advised to have them regularly. Because of the richness in vitamin A, C and E they combat heart diseases effectively. According to FAO around 250 million people which include pregnant women and children suffer from the deficiency of vitamin A, this shortfall results in diseases like measles and dysentery in children. The WHO recommends combating measles with Vitamin A, while vitamin C in mango helps in absorbing iron. Mango aids beauty enhancement, regularly taking mango enhances the complexion fair and shining. To get quick relief from diarrhea, it is recommended to take 2 – 3 serving a day of its powder with water. Mango paste also aids in controlling fever, if it is applied on palms and soles of a patient. The seeds of mango are also effective in controlling gum diseases.

Patients who suffer in-hospital cardiac arrest during night have thin chances of survival reveal a study

A study carried on 86,748 adults who participated in the American Heart Association National Registry of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation from Jan 2000 through Feb 2007 revealed some startling fact that a patient who suffers in-house cardiac arrest during night or on the weekend has thin chances of survival. The results of the study were evaluated by Mary Ann Peberdy, M.D. of Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond Va. During the study period a total of 58, 593 cases of in-hospital cardiac arrest were reported during day/evening hours, this includes 15, 110 cases on weekends, of these 28, 155 cases occurred during night hours. The researchers found a significantly lower survival to discharge rate for nighttime in-hospital cardiac arrest (14.7% vs. 19.8% for non-nighttime cardiac arrest).

The main finding of the study was a majority of deaths took place in-hospital due to cardiac arrests during nights and weekends than in the weekdays or during day time. The reason behind this could be biological differences in patients, due to negligence or shortage of hospital staffing and other operational factors were also responsible. These data suggests that there is more need and vigilance to be provided in hospitals during night time and weekend. This in return will enhance the survival rate and safety among patients due to cardiac arrest the research concluded.

But the billion dollar question is as to why people suffer from heart diseases? Why don’t they take precautions so that they could escape from getting heart diseases particularly during night time when the help factor at the hospitals is thin? The main symptom of heart disease is shortness in breathe, cold hand and feet ETC.

Most of the heart diseases occur due to wrong food habits. Cardiac arrest is the result of abrupt loss of cardiac function when the heart stops beating. When the heart stops beating a person would immediately lose consciousness and normal breathing is stopped, unless resuscitative efforts are implemented within seconds. Doctors also call this condition as “sudden death” or “sudden cardiac death (SCD)”.

Some time cardiac arrest could be flawed as a pulled muscle, in this situation take constructive measures cautiously and immediately and call your doctor. Doctors suggest the following measures which could help you 100% chances of survival particularly during winters:

  • After sleep don’t jump out of bed and start exercising. Stretch your body or walk before you start your day.
  • Dress suitably while going out in winters, wear windproof and waterproof garments.
  • Taking amla which is rich in vitamin C every day also help in reducing heart disease.
  • More over a glass of beet juice or fresh grape juice and pomegranate juice also helps in reducing chest congestions and heart aches. Moreover 1tsp of onion juice taken empty stomach in the morning also helps in normalizing the blood cholesterol level.

Heat is a vital organ in our body and controls the flow of blood; it needs to be safeguarded in an endeavor to live long.

Why people indulge in overeating during holidays and weekends and how to escape from getting those extra calories?

It is hard to escape from eating a lot more during weekends and holiday season. Even the most industrious dieter can’t get away from indulging in gaining some extra weight while holidaying. According to Jeffrey Inman, a University of Pittsburgh Professor of Marketing and Associate dean for research in the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, and his co-author Adwait Khare, Quinnipiac University professor of marketing studied the consumer eating behavior and found the quality and quantity of food taken deviate a lot during holidays and weekends.

According to research published in the fall 2009 Journal issue of Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, various festivals like, Thanksgiving, labor Day helps in binding family, friends and colleagues, all this results in high calorie intake of foods. Yet another Cornell study undertaken revealed that people at movie, theatres, and holiday receptions take 28% more total calories when they eat low fat snacks than a regular diet. Lead researcher of the study Brian Wansink in his book “Why we eat more than we think” has revealed that “people fail to realize that low-fat foods are not always low-calorie foods”. Low fat snacks in actual practice are 11% lower in calories but they believe these are 40% lower. Researchers’ revealed people believe they will feel less guilty while eating a low-fat food that is the reason why they will overindulge said Pierre Chand on, co-author and marketing professor at INSEAD in France. It is but sure that “low-fat” foods are not going to solve the obesity problem. People are sure to over-eat even the low-fat foods. But Wansink advises in his book Mindless Eating, “Stick with your regular diet and eat a bit less. It’s not only healthier but also good for your taste buds. If you are sure to control your diet during holidays, winter holidays would help you plan accordingly.

This way food taken in small quantities would also help you control your blood sugar level. Eat small but frequent meals. Don’t skip your meals entirely. Here are some holiday survival tips would help you in keeping control of yourself during holidays. Make it a habit to exercise to burn calories, take brisk walk, run or take a bike ride and eat fat in moderate level. If you can’t leave alcohol, stick to light beer or champagne spritzer. Before going for shopping eat before leaving home, this would help you control your diet. Set limits, to satisfy your sweet tooth. While attending holiday gathering or festivals stay away from the buffet table. Visualize yourself before attending a family gathering and make sure how much you are going to eat. Lastly enjoy the season and atmosphere around not just the food.

Ergonomists find kids too are at risk from repetitive strain injuries

Pain-Free Computers for Kids

Since our childhood we have been told by our parents to sit straight while eating and studying because poor body postures could lead to health problems. Likewise, with the coming up of computers and associating ourselves with keyboards, mouse and screen all the time has put various adults and teens life in danger because of their awkward sitting postures. A survey carried out on some 500 children has established that like adults teens are also contracting neck and back pains due to incorrect sitting posture while handling computer.

Now a day’s teenagers are spending a good of their time before the computers, thus putting all the strains on their bodies. A majority of today’s tech-savvy teens were operating their computer when they were at pre-K! Thus now-a-days the same youths are paying their price with bad health symptoms like eye strain, pain in fingers and neck cramps. According to Robin Mary Gillespie, if kids show the symptoms like that of adults while surfing the web for a longer period of time this could be the sign of disability.

The survey carried on 500 children in the age group of 12 to 18 who were the regular users of computers came across the symptoms of neck and shoulder pain. Most of the pain arising out of using computer mouse could be avoided by holding closely to the body. By using monitors also children are prone to neck problems. It is thus a good idea to lower the monitor so that the neck could be straight. According to Gillespie, laptop users should make use of external keyboard and mouse to control the distance between monitor screen and keyboard. Gillespie concluded by saying that finally we looked as to how the bending of hands leads to various problems like carpal tunnel syndrome. In an effort to protect oneself from getting injury it is suggested to type with your hands as flat as possible taking rest in between.

This study was the result of kids having started developing eye strain, neck stiffness and carpal tunnel after using computers on a regular basis, just like the office workers. Of all these injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome is most common and affects wrist and hands of a computer user. Its symptoms include numbness in the hands and fingers, loss of strength and coordination in a user’s hands. Various back injuries are also the result of bad sitting postures.

In an effort to reduce these injuries it is suggested to raise or lower chairs to refrain from typing with your wrists. Place the keyboard at a slightly lower level from the normal desk height. Use a footrest to give relief to your legs. Ensure your elbows should form a 90 degree angle while hanging at the sides. Avoid glare from the computer monitor and take frequent breaks from your work.

Three out of Four American women have disordered eating, survey suggests

According to a new survey undertaken by Self Magazine in association with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and carried on 4,023 women, it was found that 65 percent of American women in the age group of 25 to 45 have disorder relating to eating behaviors. Other 10 percent women were found having symptoms related to anorexia, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. According to Cynthia R. Bulik, Ph.D., William and Jeanne Jordan Professor of Eating Disorders in the UNC School of Medicine’s department of psychiatry and director of the UNC Eating Disorders Program, “we were surprised to find in our survey high number of women engaging themselves in unhealthy purging activities. These women do not belong to only one group but they belonged to different ethnic backgrounds like Hispanic or Latina, black or African American, white and Asian who were reported to engage in unhealthy eating behaviors. It was proved in the survey that 31 percent of women agreed to the fact that after gaining substantial weight, they attempted to lose their weight by having laxatives, diuretics or diet pills”. Bulik added, about 50 percent of the women in survey found to be engaged in purging activities at least once in a week and other women did so every day.

The survey found 67 percent women try to lose their weight in some way or the other method, 37 percent skip their meals in an effort to lose weight, 27 percent women feel unhappy if they find they have gained the weight, 26 percent women cut out the entire food groups from their diet, around 16 percent women dieted on 1,000 calories a day or fewer, 13 percent women smoke in an endeavor to lose weight and 12 percent women eat when they are not hungry. Bulik said activities like eliminating carbohydrates, extreme dieting and skipping meals are related to disordered eating habits.

As far as Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is concerned various individuals who have this condition eat excessive amounts due to two reasons: firstly those individuals who have been on dieting for some time start eating abruptly after feeling hungry. Secondly sometimes individuals over-eat so as to give comfort to them. Binge in fact could be described as an attempt where persons soothe themselves emotionally. People who engage in binge-eating are often embarrassed and ashamed and are heavier people than their counterparts. Symptoms related to binge eating disorder include eating quickly and in secrecy, unable to stop eating, eating large amount of food in one sitting, feeling uncomfortable after eating, feeling of guiltiness of their binges. Often people who binge eats are obese people and one in five obese people engage in this habit.
