Benefits of exercise therapy during depression and anxiety

The state of depression can be considered as a low state of energy, in which a depressed person experiences lots of anxiety. This state of anxiety leads to panic attacks. If a person fails to control his/her feelings it may lead to a state of depression. A depressed person often shows symptoms of despair, anger and hopelessness. A person suffering from depression remains anxious or has anxiety disorders. S/he remains fearful and has to counter panic attacks. If this condition is not treated well in time, it could lower a person’s ability to maintain relations and working capabilities. Both these disorders of anxiety and depression are treated with anti-depressant medications.

There is no clue available as to why different type of depressions is always accompanied by anxiety. But every problem has a solution. In a recent clinical study by Jasper Smits, Director of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas revealed that regular exercise have shown tremendous benefits for mental health.

The full benefits of exercise therapy can be achieved by a patient if the therapist is fully trained. The research was carried out by Smits and Michael Otto, Psychology Professor based at Boston University. Their research was based on various analyses of population based studies as well as clinical and meta-analytic reviews. The traditional treatment of cognitive therapy has some limitations as they are not accessible to every person who requires them. Exercise helps them to remain focused and engaged in their activities.

These findings are based on the recent Conference of the Anxiety Disorder Association of America. The workshop was based on the therapist guide “Exercise for Mood and Anxiety Disorders” (Oxford University Press, September 2009). Those individuals who often exercise report fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression. Patients suffered with anxiety disorders are treated naturally through exercise as it helps them to control fear and other bodily sensations like heart beating and rapid breathing. Till date 40 percent of Americans have sedentary habit, but participating in regular exercising session could help getting some immediate benefits. It has been proved that after spending 25 minutes in exercise, you can improve your overall mood and body structure in the long run.

A well-balanced diet and avoidance of caffeine and excess sugar food could help your body to fight against panic attacks. Above all proper sleep and good rest is recommended to deal with anxiety and panic attacks as your body needs rest to recuperate from day today activity. Panic attacks occur due to irrelevant causes of stress and strain. People have to control their mind to deal with this condition. In order to recoup fully it is necessary to handle and manage stress and strain properly. One should identify the reason behind panic attacks and do remedial measures accordingly.

It has been a sad fact that there has been a continuous increase in the number of people being greatly affected by depression and/or anxiety, especially here in the United States. Notice how our society has been recently grieving in the midst of indiscriminate killings in schools or even public places in general by those criminals who have been suffering from mental illnesses. These problems are often ignored causing more problems in the long run, making more lives at risk. As a health counselor, I always advise my patients to do some form of exercise at least twice or thrice in a week. Not only does it help them to stay fit and healthy, it also improves their mental well-being and over-all longevity.

After Robin Williams’ death, a lot of celebrities have talked about their ways of fighting depression and anxiety. A lot of them have sought psychiatric help and some have participated in physical activities like Angelina Jolie and Uma Thurman. These activities can really help the person with depression or anxiety to forget their worries for a while. Although all kinds of exercise can really help in controlling a patient’s fear and “other bodily sensations,” I prefer Uma Thurman’s chosen activity which is yoga since it is not only an exercise but it also calms the mind aside from encouraging people to eat a well-balanced diet. Of course, the family’s support also goes a long way in helping the person cope with any kind of worries they may have.

I believe depression and anxiety are issues that need to be addressed properly to provide more treatment options. Medicinal treatments are sometimes rejected by patients due to the harsh side effects; some experience bouts of hallucinations and paranoia which could even worsen into a depressive state. I came across this article finding it impressive to have encouraged people to use exercise as a therapy to conquer depression. Aside from proper diet and a great discipline to exercise, it is essential to find happiness in everything we do and seek help whenever we have to. We should all remember that prevention is better than cure. Thanks for another great piece of writing, Herbs Pro!
