Potential Benefits of Probiotics

I am sure that you have heard about probiotics, many of the yogurt commercials these days are talking about them. But, do you know what they are and how they work for you? Probiotics are living bacteria that have been proven to be of benefit to the host. A probiotic is a microorganism that has an effect on other microorganisms.

Some studies have shown that supplemental probiotics can help boost the immune system and may help to prevent cancer, and certain types of diarrhea. They may be used to treat various forms of gastroenteritis; they might be able to reduce the length and the frequency of stools.

Many times people have antibiotic – associated diarrhea, this is the result of an imbalance in the colonic micro biota that is brought on by antibiotics. The antibiotics will sometimes interfere with the body’s ability to metabolize carbohydrates and decrease fatty acid absorption, and osmotic diarrhea is a result of this. It is believed that antibiotic – associated diarrhea (AAD) can be reduced with probiotic therapy.

Many times a lactose intolerant person may benefit from a probiotic supplement. There are certain types of probiotics that may help these individuals tolerate more lactose that they normally can.

In regards to cancer, probiotics have been shown to have anti – mutagenic effects. What that means is this; the probiotics bind with carcinogenic substances (found in cooked meats) and evidence supports that they act against colon cancer, binding with the cancer causing substances.

Probiotics can also aid in lowering cholesterol. They lower cholesterol by breaking down the bile in the intestines thus slowing down or preventing it from reabsorbing. This enters the blood as cholesterol if it is permitted to do so.

Although more study is needed in this area, some positive results have occurred with blood pressure. Some studies have shown a slight reduction in the blood pressure when taking a probiotic supplement. Not only that, but more positive results have occurred with the immune system, bacteria in the gut is needed so by taking the probiotics the “good” bacteria helps to maintain the immune system. Probiotics are also important in the fight against Inflammatory Bowel Disease in adults. They help to regulate the bowels and reduce inflammation as a result of this disease.

The potential benefits of probiotics are many and need to be explored more thoroughly, but studies are promising for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, colitis, and necrotizing enterocolitis as well as the benefits it produces in vitamin production.

Folic acid and its Importance

What is folic acid, and why is it so important? These are very good questions and I intend to answer them for you. Folic acid is vitamin B9 or folic acid or folate; these are the water-soluble forms of vitamin B9. Vitamin B9 or Folic Acid is essential for the many bodily functions. The human body needs folic acid to synthesize and repair DNA and it is especially important in aiding rapid cell division and growth. What exactly does that mean? During pregnancy and infancy when the child is growing quickly folic acid is needed to ensure the proper growth of the child. Not only is it needed for cell division and growth, but also adults and children alike need it to produce healthy red blood cells and prevent anemia.

Where do the names folic and folate come from? They are derived from the Latin word meaning “leaf.” This is because the main source of folic acid is leafy vegetables. But in recent times most diets containing cereals and bread are fortified with folic acid. When we lack folate it is said that we have a folate deficiency, this is uncommon in most Western diets.

Folate or folic acid is of the utmost importance during pregnancy. The lack of folic acid can result in many different health problems, but in the unborn fetus it can cause neural tube defects. Some of the most notable symptoms of a folic acid deficiency are diarrhea, weakness, shortness of breath, nerve damage with weakness and limb numbness, pregnancy complications, mental confusion, forgetfulness, and other mental/cognitive decline. It is possible to also experience depression, sore or swollen tongue, peptic or mouth ulcers, headaches, heart palpitations, irritability, and behavioral disorders. Low levels of folic acid can lead to impaired DNA synthesis which can in turn cause cancer to develop.
Folic acid must be replaced everyday due to the fact that it is a water-soluble vitamin and is regularly removed from the body through the urine; this also means that the risk of toxicity from folic acid is very low.

As mentioned before the importance of folic acid during pregnancy is very important to the mother and the unborn embryo. Folic acid protects against neural tube defects. Neural tube defects are severe abnormalities that affect the central nervous system, resulting in defects in the spine, brain, and skull. The risk of neural tube defects is reduced when the mother is consuming a supplemental folic acid along with a healthy diet. Neural tube defects is just one of the problems caused by not having enough folic acid. Cleft lips, congenital heart defects, low infant birth weight and fetal growth retardation can also occur due to deficiency of Folic Acid.

What is vitamin C and why do we need Vitamin C?

What is vitamin C?
Everyone knows what vitamin C is, right? It is ascorbic acid, a water soluble vitamin that must be replenished daily. This vitamin is needed in the body to form collagen in bones, cartilage, muscle, and blood vessels that aid in the absorption of iron. Vitamin C can be found in fruits and vegetables. Citrus fruits seem to be the highest in vitamin C, such as oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, and so on.

Why do we need Vitamin C?
A severe vitamin C deficiency can cause scurvy. This is a disease that causes, severe tiredness, hair loss, and gum disease. It is rare now, but it didn’t used to be. Scurvy can cause sudden death and patients with scurvy are treated with vitamin C and kept under a doctor’s care.

The facts are there are many reasons to make sure you get enough vitamin C in your diet. This vitamin is an important antioxidant, it aids in the prevention of some cancers by blocking free radicals. Vitamin C is needed for growth and repair for tissue in all parts of your body. It helps to heal wounds and create scar tissue, while repairing and maintaining cartilage, bones, and teeth. It not only does all of this, but it forms important protein that is used to make skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels.

The many uses of Vitamin C

Over the years it has been used in the prevention and cure for the common cold. This has not been conclusively proven, but it seems that people who take vitamin C on a regular basis tend to get over their colds faster and the colds do not last quite as long.

Vitamin C is an anti-inflammatory. That is why many people feel that it helps with asthma. Asthma is the swelling of the lungs due to an allergic reaction to something. It has also been suggested that low levels of vitamin C can contribute to the development of asthma, but these studies are inconclusive and need more research.

In people with high blood pressure it has been noted that taking a vitamin C supplement may decrease systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Skin aging may be slowed down by vitamin C. Vitamin C can be applied topically to improve the appearance of wrinkled skin, fine and coarse wrinkling, yellowing, and roughness of the skin. Also you may note that vitamin C is used by the body to create collagen, this aids in skin health as well.

Honestly, the benefits of vitamin C could be discussed at length. The list of benefits and possible benefits goes on and on.

Vitamin D and its Deficiency

Tired, feeling lazy, bone pain, muscle weakness, just not feeling like you? It could be that you are suffering from a vitamin D deficiency. Many people suffer from vitamin D deficiency and never even know it. The symptoms are generally subtle. Low vitamin D can pose a health risks and can be associated with cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, severe asthma in children and cancer. There have even been some studies that suggest vitamin D could help in the treatment and prevention of type 1 and 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and multiple sclerosis.

Do we know what causes a vitamin D deficiency? Well, there are a number of things that contribute to it. Sometimes it is as simple as we are not consuming the right amount of vitamin D over time. This happens to people that are following a strict vegetarian diet. Vitamin D is found in many different animal based sources, such as fish, fish oil, egg yolk, cheese, fortified milk, and beef liver.

Exposure to sunlight is important; vitamin D is made in the body when your skin is exposed to the sun. There are many reasons you may not get enough sun, you live in northern latitudes, have a job that prevents you from getting sun, homebound, or maybe you wear long robes or head coverings (for religious reasons) that prevent you from getting the sunlight you need.

If you have dark skin, the pigment in dark skin, melanin, reduces the skin’s ability to make vitamin D from sunlight exposure. This occurs more in older adults.

The older you get the less likely your kidneys will be able to convert vitamin D into its active form. Certain medical problems such as Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, and celiac disease will prevent the absorption of vitamin D from the things you eat.

Obese people sometimes have a problem with a vitamin D deficiency. When you have a body mass index of over 30 or greater you will have lower levels of vitamin D. Why is this? When you are overweight vitamin D is released from the blood by fat cells and this alters its release into circulation.

The only real way to know for sure if you suffer from a vitamin D deficiency is to have a blood test. You doctor can order one and he will be able to tell you if there is a problem.

How do you treat a vitamin D deficiency? The only way is to get more vitamin D is to change your diet and take a vitamin D supplement. You can even spend more time in the sun, but be careful how much time you spend in the sun and use a sunscreen.

How to avoid food allergies?

Food allergies seem to be on the rise. What is a food allergy? This is when you eat something and your body reacts as though that food is harmful to you. This causes your body to fight against the food as if it were an infection or disease. Your body creates antibodies to fight the food allergen; these antibodies are what set off the allergy.

Your food allergy can be triggered by eating, inhaling, or just touching the food you are allergic to. Now, your body will act to defend itself from the attacker (food you are allergic to) by making something called histamine. The chemical, histamine, will cause allergic symptoms that can affect the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, or cardiovascular system. These symptoms range from a runny nose, itchy skin, and abdominal pain, wheezing, to swelling of tongue, lips and throat. These symptoms can be life threatening should you experience wheezing or swelling seek medical attention immediately. A severe case is called anaphylaxis, this comes on suddenly and if not treated can be life-threatening.

Sometimes people confuse an allergy with food intolerance. The symptoms are similar in some cases. Food intolerance includes symptoms like burping, indigestions, gas, headaches, diarrhea, or nervousness for starters. Food intolerance never involves the immune system, and is rarely dangerous.

What are the common food allergens? The top offenders are milk, eggs, peanuts, soy, wheat, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. However, many times a child will outgrow their food allergen. Studies show that shellfish allergies develop later in life, not affecting child very often.

How long does it take to have an allergic reaction to something? The time for this varies from person to person and can range from very mild to severe. When having a severe reaction, more than one part of the body is involved. A reaction can come as soon as just a few minutes and up to a few hours after contact with the offending food.

How do you diagnose a food allergy? When you go to your doctor he will help you to isolate the problem. Usually, the doctor will start with the most common foods that cause problems. Once you and your doctor have that figured out, you must learn how to avoid that or those foods. Sometimes the doctor may recommend you go to an Allergist. This is a doctor that specializes in allergy issues, he might want to perform blood tests to isolate and confirm the exact problem.

Now that you know and understand what you are allergic to, where do you go from here? The first step is to learn how to avoid this food. Always check the ingredient list, make sure you are not unknowingly eating something that could potentially kill you. Allergies have no cure, but you can control them with avoidance of the allergen and with medications. Antihistamines may be used to treat the symptoms of your allergies by taking the hives, runny nose, and abdominal pain away, but the allergy will still be an issue.

The best thing to do is strive to understand your allergy, and avoid the allergen. Children suffer from food allergies more often than adults, but food allergies affect millions of people in the United States alone.
