Slow Breathing Reduces Pain

If a person usually feels pain in its body parts, it could be a case of not breathing in tandem. Pain could be sporadic or chronic and can occur in any part of body where there are nerves. In a recent research published in PAIN a Journal of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP)of carried out Arthur (Bud) Craig, PhD, at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, it was revealed that controlled breathing slow down the rate of pain drastically. Even people suffering from Fibromyalgia found relief as they breathe slowly except when they were overwhelmed by negative feelings, depression and sadness.

The findings laid stress on the beneficial effects through yogic and Zen meditation which helps in reducing feelings of guilt and depression. The results also stressed on the role of a person’s positive and negative attitude on the feelings of pain. The study was carried on the two groups of women in the age group of 45 to 65. One group had women who were diagnosed with fibromyalgia and other group was healthy. During the research participants were administered moderately painful heat pulses on their palms while they were breathing normally and when they reduce their breathing rat by 50 percent. After each administration they were asked to report their feelings of pain and its intensity and their unpleasantness and their affect on mood.
On analyzing the all results of intensity of the pain and unpleasantness feeling it was found, those participants who breathed slowly had a very low intensity of pain than their counterparts. Various other random studies have highlighted that those who remain depressed can acquire fibromyalgia disease and there is a sure shot connection between pain and emotions. The study made it clear that those suffering from fibromyalgia can benefit from slow breathing if they instill positive affect as a trait. Dr. Craig concluded, “the study showcased the FM patients generally contain low positive affects or energy reserves, but those who have some positive energy left in their “mental battery” can be benefited from slow breathing just like healthy normal.”

Apart from therapy and surgery, diet and lifestyle also come into the picture in preventing and controlling pain management. Various doctors are of the view that physical therapy and workout regimens also help in strengthening muscles, joints and bones. Moreover a diet full of protein and calcium with vitamin D is also recommended to control pain very especially those persons who are recovering from accidents and sports injuries. Apart from this patients are also advised sufficient rest and use of heat and cold therapy to reduce pain and swelling.
